A Brief History of Christian Missions
π A Brief History of Christian Missions
“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
— Matthew 28:19–20 (ESV)
From the early church in Jerusalem to the farthest corners of the earth, Christian missions have been a vital expression of faith and obedience to Christ's Great Commission.
-
Early Church (1st–3rd Century):
The apostles, particularly Paul, spread the Gospel throughout the Roman Empire. Christianity began to grow beyond Jewish communities. -
Medieval Missions (4th–15th Century):
Missionaries like St. Patrick in Ireland and St. Boniface in Germany played a role in evangelizing Europe. -
Age of Discovery (15th–18th Century):
With global exploration, missionaries traveled to Asia, Africa, and the Americas. Catholic orders like the Jesuits became active worldwide. -
Modern Missions (19th–20th Century):
Protestant mission movements grew rapidly. Figures like William Carey (India), Hudson Taylor (China), and David Livingstone (Africa) pioneered new frontiers. -
Contemporary Missions (21st Century):
Today, missions include not only evangelism but also community development, education, healthcare, and advocacy. The Global South now sends missionaries too.
Christian missions are no longer just a Western endeavor—they are a global movement united in the name of Christ.
